In 2005, after a decade of working and teaching exclusively in clay, I began painting under the pseudo name of "Bongo". My early works under this name were a combination of whimsical paintings with punchline type titles and a fewer number of abstract works on large canvases with bright colors and bold black line work. The first show of my new work was at Club 609 in my hometown of Joplin, Missouri (Carthage,Mo.) and consisted of 21, (mostly) large paintings and a table I designed as the centerpiece of the show. In the three months that the show was up, thirteen of the twenty one pieces sold, (including the table which is now part of the dining room of The Blue Moon Bakery in Tulsa OK.) selling more work than any other showing in the club's 18 year history... and "Bongo" was off and running. Over the years, more and more abstracts began to emerge while my cartoony style continues to evolve with my subjective work. In 2014 (because the two styles are so uniquely different) I decided to split the two up. While I will continue to paint my abstracts under the name of "Bongo" , my more whimsical, subjective work will painted under the name of "Jerry " and will always be signed "Jerry AVL N.C."
The first of these new works can be seen on the next page of my site, "Jerry AVL"
Thanks to all who have supported Bongo over the past 10 years .If you liked his work, you are going to LOVE ours!!

The majority of my abstracts begin as no more than a large scribble drawing. The process is not so different from the "stained glass windows" nearly everyone drew as a child. You do a scribble drawing
then just fill in with colors. ( I went to a Catholic grade school so, not everyone may have known them as stained glass windows) We just called them that because we were told if we didn't, we would go to hell. Once the scribble drawing is finished. I begin to darken some lines while "blocking out" many connecting lines. Because my non objective work is never anything preconceived, I continually turn the canvas as I paint, filling in colors and adding shapes to the existing lines. The piece is finished when it feels balanced, interesting, and aesthetically pleasing.

<< "Some Things Cannot Be Explained"
It's true....Some things cannot be explained. Like this recent painting. I have no idea what it means or where the images come from that make up this two panel abstract. Bird, turtle, and fish like images intermingle with opposing geometric planes. Like many of my pieces, the longer you look, the more you will find. Perhaps these beings represent the comings and goings of creatures of all forms passing through other dimensions and being transformed into something totally different...all without their knowing....I DON'T KNOW!!! Maybe it is just mother issues I DON'T KNOW!! If it IS....mother issues have never looked so good. Measuring 40" x 64" this two panel original will be framed together and offered at $1500 <<<<< "Ascension" 15" x 30" Black and White Acrylic on Wood Offered at $275 ABOVE: "Contraption" 22" x 30"
Acrylic on Canvas Offered at $450 BELOW: "Retropolitan" 30" x 30" Acrylic on Linen $650 SOLD |
